The dream of a Channel Tunnel allowing a direct London to Paris train preceded
the reality by at least two hundred years.
A period of particularly frenzied interest in the scheme was the 1870s and 80s,
in which the scheme of Sir Edward Watkin to drive a railway tunnel beneath the
English Channel actually resulted in works beginning beneath the cliffs of the
Kent coast.
This scheme ran into fierce opposition from the military authorities, who considered
that it would lay Great Britain open to invasion.
Work eventually started on a tunnel to carry a railroad service linking London
to Paris in 1987, and the fixed link was opened in 1994 - nearly 2 years late,
and way over budget.
In 1993 a high-speed rail link opened from the French-side Tunnel portal to Lille,
and from there to Paris and Brussels.
Ten years later the section of line from London to the tunnel was upgraded to
carry high speed trains. |
